Dear Hamsun and festival friend!

It's almost time for this year's Hamsundager - The Ring is Over - with a packed arts and culture program. We'll be "stealing" with a kickoff in the Æventyrsalen already on Monday, August 3. There will be a reunion with the silent film concert Ednama sjatto/Markens grøde - new Sami music for old silent film. First premiered at Hamsundagene 2024, and now, finally back to its birthplace. Subject and research manager Alvhild Dvergsdal will give an introduction before we get to experience the beautiful, new music LIVE for the silent film from 1921.

And of course there will be HamsundageneUNG – the festival where young people create a festival for young people. This will be held in parallel with Hamsundagene on the festival's last day, Friday 7 August. A separate program with author meetings, competitions, Nordic manga drawing courses, concerts and stories – some scary and some happy. For children of all ages. And everything is completely free.

Tuesday, August 4th, is the official opening, as is tradition, at Knut Hamsun's Childhood Home at Hamsund. There will be a speech for the day, an exhibition and a concert. We will conclude the opening with the start of the Hamsundagenes literature seminar with a lecture about Hamsun's childhood.

The Hamsundagenes literature seminar on August 4th and 5th is both academic and entertaining. For two days, the country's foremost Hamsun experts will illuminate various themes and aspects of Hamsun's literature. Recognizable to most and something new for many.

This year there will also be a rich music program on several stages in The Hamsun Centre and Æventyrsalen. Our partner and curators in "Digital In Berlin" have put together a fantastic music program with star artists from home and abroad. Among other things, a concert with Maja Ratkje feat. Matti Aikio in Æventyrsalen on Thursday, August 6 , and a unique concert with Trondheim Voices in Hamarøy Church the following day. Two experiences you shouldn't miss.

In addition to book talks, lectures, breakfast conversations and anecdotes, there will be a bus trip to Kråkmo Gård where we will hear about the friendship between Anna i Markvatnet and Knut Hamsun. There is so much great stuff on the program! Check it out here on the website and follow us on Facebook .

Welcome to this year's cultural festival on Hamarøy!

Greetings from the Festival Director

History

Hamsundagene was established in 1982 on Hamarøy, where Knut Hamsun grew up. The festival is held mainly every other year around Hamsun's birthday, August 4, and aims to celebrate and explore Hamsun's writing and life.

Over the years, the festival has evolved from a purely literary seminar to include a wide range of cultural events, such as theater performances, concerts, and art exhibitions. This has helped to attract a diverse audience and create a popular festival with great engagement both locally and nationally.

In recent years, Hamsundagene has engaged in current social issues, such as the inclusion of Lule Sami language and culture, as well as a focus on queer perspectives in literature. This has been part of the festival's goal to be relevant and inclusive.
