Ednama Sjatto is back
The Hamsundange in 2024 had the premiere of "Ednama sjatto": new, Sami music for the silent film Markens grøde from 1921. And now it's happening again, same place, almost the same time!
Hamsundagene 2026 kickstarts this year's festival, the day before, with a LIVE performance of "Ednama sjatto" in the Æventyrsalen at The Hamsun Centre .
Since its premiere, "Ednama sjatto" has been on stages both at home and abroad: Tromsø at STIFF (25), Trencin/ Slovakia (25), music film festival. Mo i Rana at Smeltedigelen (25) and Music Festival in Bodø (26).
The silent film "The Produce of the Field" from 1921 is based on the book of the same name by Knut Hamsun. The same book for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. The book is an agricultural epic about the farmer Isak Selanraa who works his way up as a farmer in what is described as untouched wilderness. The book refers to the Sami in a negative and racist manner. This has recently been strongly problematic. By setting the silent film to music with modern Sami music, it gives a counterbalance and a new dimension to the story. We call it "a Sami takeover. A dramatic experience that touches many senses and gives a new perspective.
Musician, composer and Hamarøyværing, Svein Schultz was commissioned in 2024, gathered a fantastic group of musical artists and co-composers to create and perform the unique work. The star team you can experience in Æventyrsaleb on August 3 consists of: Lávre, on joik and vocals. Ronja - Katrin Larsen, on vocals. Ole Jørn Myklebust on, trumpet, electronic and vocals. Kristian Olstad on guitars. Stein Austrud, on keyboards, Aleksander Kostopoulos on percussion and percussion, and David Solheim on sound design.
"Since this year's Hamsundays are subtitled "The Ring is Broken" (Hamsun, 1936), it's perfect to have this fantastic group back to start the whole party! It's a jewel of a performance, a "must see" for everyone," festival director Anita Overelv explains enthusiastically.
The film concert will be performed LIVE in the Adventure Hall on Hamarøy, August 3rd at 7:00 PM.
The official opening is August 4th and ends on August 7th.
