Nordland Theatre: I am here

  • Hamsunsenter 1464 Vestfjordveien Hamarøy, Nordland, 8294 Norway (map)

Theatre by and with Eva Dons, based on her diaries as a cancer patient.

Through storytelling, song and music, you are invited to an experience that challenges perceptions and prejudices about cancer and those affected. It challenges our social, philosophical and emotional understanding of the disease and places it within a time frame spanning from ancient Persia to an unspecified future.

The script, lyrics and music have been created by extracting the essence from around 100 pages of diary notes written by Eva Dons every single day during her illness as a cancer patient. The shock of the diagnosis, the encounter with a healthcare system that is at a crossroads between rational treatment and complete incomprehension. The fear of illness in others and the fight against one's own weakness.

On stage are author, composer and actor Eva Dons and musician/arranger Morten Reppesgård. The performance is accompanied by a living scenography through drawings projected into the stage space by scenographer, lighting designer and illustrator Katarina Caspersen. The scenography is both a co-star and backdrop in the performance.

The story harks back to the myth of the first known case of breast cancer in Queen Atossa of Persia 2500 years ago. This is made visible through the choral work "Atossa's Song" composed by Bodvar D. Moe to lyrics by Ragnar Olsen. Arranged and facilitated by the performance's musical director and musician Morten Reppesgård.

Director Karolina B. Stie, who in recent years has worked in the space between dance and performance art, has put together a performance that has a condensed, stylistic expression. Something that is also accentuated in Line Maher's costume design.
