Banned Books Week aims to raise awareness of freedom of expression and democracy, and to provide a framework for conversations and debate on these topics. The week helps to strengthen preparedness against various forms of censorship, and is a celebration of the freedom to read. On Hamarøy we have decided to call it Democracy Week.
The Hamsun Centre as an instrument - a sound performance.
Architect, composer and sound artist Gisle Nataas presents his site-specific work Architecture as Instrument / Knut Hamsun Centre on Hamarøy.
Using Steven Holl's distinctive architecture as a starting point, Nataas turns the building itself into a musical instrument. Using field recordings, contact microphones and electronic processing, he elicits sounds, resonances and vibrations from concrete, metal, surfaces and space.
The work gives the audience the opportunity to experience The Hamsun Centre in a new way – as a living, sound organism where the architecture itself creates the material and form in the music.
Through the project Architecture as Instrument, Gisle Nataas has presented more than 40 concerts and sound installations in European cities, including at the Ultima Festival in Oslo. In 2025, he released the LP Architecture as Instrument / Fehn, based on the architecture of Sverre Fehn.
