Film screening with Veten film club
Andrey Zvyagintsev is one of the most significant filmmakers of his generation, known for challenging and exploring Russian society and politics through a dark, neo-noir style. His films, such as Back (2003), Leviathan (2014) and Loveless (2017), have won international awards, including awards at the Cannes Film Festival, and have been nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Zvyagintsev recently survived a severe COVID-19 infection that kept him hospitalized for almost a year, with 90% lung damage. He now lives in exile in Europe, and is strongly critical of Vladimir Putin and the war of aggression in Ukraine. His latest film, Minotaur (2026), won the Grand Prix at Cannes and will be released in February 2027.
Kolia lives a simple and secluded life in a small town on the Barents Sea. He lives with a young wife, who works at the fish factory, and a defiant teenager from a previous marriage. Kolia doesn't own much, but he has a beautiful villa with a great view of the sea. It's a lovely place.
The mayor thinks so too. He has fallen in love with Kolia's property and is gradually trying by all means to get his hands on it. But Kolia is not going to give up without a fight and contacts an old friend from the military who has become a sharp-shooting lawyer in Moscow. He digs up dirt on the mayor.
LEVIATHAN is Andrey Zvyagintsev's fourth feature film and follows BACK (2003), EXILE (2007) and ELENA (2011) in a masterful way. No other director takes the pulse of Russia like him. Zvyagintsev was honored with the Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival. LEVIATHAN won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and was nominated for an Oscar in the same category.

Veten Film Club is located on Hamarøy in Nordland and their regular film screenings take place in the Adventure Hall here at The Hamsun Centre .
Anyone can become a member of the film club. Membership costs NOK 50 for those between 0 and 20 years of age, and NOK 100 for those 20 years of age or older. Membership lasts for six months from the date of purchase.
