This event is part of Democracy Week, October 5 - 11.
Banned Books Week aims to raise awareness of freedom of expression and democracy, and to provide a framework for conversations and debate on these topics. The week helps to strengthen preparedness against various forms of censorship, and is a celebration of the freedom to read. On Hamarøy we have decided to call it Democracy Week.
Music and art help shape democracies!
With the bands "Bez Ladn A Skladu" from Trencin in Slovakia and "Erling Ramskjell and his eminent men" from Hamarøy/Bodø.
“Bez Ladn A Skladu” started as early as 1985, with lyrics critical of the Soviet regime at the time. They were even one of the bands that the New York Times described as "the group that helped bring down the Iron Curtain", NYT, 2009.
Ramskjell & co. have been central in "building bridges" with several musical events both in Slovakia and Norway. The bands give us a musical insight into what it means to live oppressed until the slogans of freedom.
The concert at Hamarøy is the conclusion of the major initiative Art of Democracy in Bodø.
