"In the winter of 18** I traveled to Lofoten with one of Rønneberg's fishing yachts from Ålesund. We made the trip in just under four weeks, I disembarked in Skroven and set about waiting for a boathouse to move on. At Easter a homecoming boat was going over to Saltenlandet and although I did not want to arrive exactly at the destination with this boat group, I nevertheless accompanied it. My errand was that I had an acquaintance and friend in these lands and his name was Munken Vendt; the two of us had agreed to join forces on a hike. That was fifteen years ago, half a lifetime ago."

Rosa (1908) is the second volume of the double novel about Benoni and Rosa.
Rosa is back at Sirilund after her husband, Nicolai Arentsen, left her. Benoni is still in love with Rosa, as is student Parelius, who is the tutor for Mack's children and the one who writes the story. Benoni gets Rosa, but the marriage is not the idyll he had dreamed of. Rosa remains distant and unapproachable.
In Rosa , Edvarda, Mack's daughter from Pan , reappears. Her marriage to the Finnish count has collapsed, and disillusioned Edvarda seeks companionship with the pagan Monk Vendt. An attempt is made to put an end to Mack's unbridled life - without success.
"Luther, yes, he was now the great sailor on this sea of life."
"I believe in madness by virtue of its necessity," she said, "yes, by virtue of its own reason as balance."
"It is not fitting for Procurator Arentsen to walk here like a half-brother of a disgrace."
