BJÖRGERS

"Facing south, on the right was a long, steep, mighty hill. Behind this were blue mountains. On the left a bare cliff; many waterfalls descending. The forest was in full leaf; it sent a good smell with the wind to all sides, and reminded one of life in a leafy hall."

1878

The plot in Bjørger (1878) begins with a family tragedy.

After losing everything they own, the parents of fifteen-year-old Thor and newborn Bjørger die dramatically. The brothers experience the hardship differently. Thor flees to the mountains, while Bjørger is adopted by a friendly and wealthy couple. However, both are engaged in poetry, and their scattered meetings revolve around experiences related to writing. Thor dies young, while Bjørger experiences a heavy betrayal of love. When he finally puts the betrayal behind him, he emerges hardened and strong.

Bjørger is partly influenced by the popular literature of the time and has elements of dialect.
